re: In the old mainframe model, when the mainframe went down, ALL the terminals were dead. In the distributed model, only the computer that goes down is dead.

Even better, if everyone is still connected to the grid, the guy the went down can just start drawing from the grid. Even he doesn't go down.

Especially with solar. How much would it cost to put distributed solar and wind vs. the cost of building new nuke, gas and coal fired plants, plus their fuel, over the life of the distributed equipment? I'm sure it's more at todays price, but with scale it might even be less. And there is a lot of new more efficient alt energy equipment technology in the pipeline.

Should be interesting... hope we get an administration with imagination in '09. 20 years you won't recognize the place.
