If the search for partisan advantage is trumping research than that would perhaps be new. But I don't really see that happening. If it isn't partisan advantage, but just more generally "politics", well that is neither new nor automatically negative. A position like the Surgeon General's should perhaps be non-partisan, but it is inherently political. What's different now is that the specific political ideas are different. Government campaigns against smoking or calls for regulation of CO2 emissions are political actions as well.
