Another strike...Zambia this time...

Kansanshi copper miners go on strike in Zambia

LUSAKA (Reuters) - Workers at Zambia's Kansanshi copper mine, a unit of Canada's First Quantum Minerals <FN.TO>, have gone on strike in a dispute over pay, state media reported on Thursday. The Mine Workers Union of Zambia said its members walked off the job on Wednesday after learning that management had changed the terms of a wage agreement reached last week, effectively reducing a 21 percent pay increase for the workers, the Times of Zambia said. It was not immediately clear how many miners were taking part in the industrial action, but officials said the dispute had halted operations at the mine in Solwezi, located 900 km (562 miles) northwest of the capital Lusaka. The mine began operations in 2006. 'If our members refuse to go back to work, there is nothing we can do. We were underpaid after agreeing on a 21 percent increment,' union official Dustan Kalebwe was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
