SEC, Where Are You?

Whole Foods' secret admirer

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey, under a pseudonym, praised his own company and tossed darts at rival natural foods grocer Wild Oats for eight years on a Yahoo! stock forum. He once wrote that Wild Oats had "no value and no future." The comments stopped six months before Whole Foods agreed to buy Wild Oats in February. Former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Harvey Pitt said it "isn't per se unlawful" for an executive to anonymously praise his own stock, "but it's dicey." Mackey -- who once complimented his own haircut -- said it was all in good fun. The identity of his alter ego was disclosed in documents released by the Federal Trade Commission, which is trying to block the merger on antitrust grounds. (The Wall Street Journal)
