<The pros at State wanted no part of planning anything for Iraq> The pros at State definitely saw that the invasion of Iraq was stupid. But they developed plans anyway, and their plans were brushed aside by Rumsfeld. Ask anybody who ever met with Rumsfeld whether or not he listened to anybody who was not inclined to parrot back his own opinions -- ditto for Cheney. He was single-mindedly deaf to all who might have helped him see the disaster he would preside over in Iraq. He and Cheney were the perfect team to launch a misguided war and prosecute it without common sense or basic competence that was readily available elsewhere within the US Government. I see now that Bush has taken to blaming General Franks for the miserable screw-ups in Iraq -- how pathetic to see the Commander in Chief point the finger at anybody but himself, Cheney and Rumsfeld for this miserable failure of foreign policy.
