how can you support the direction the republican party has taken?

What makes you think I do? Just because I post here, perhaps? You're posting here, too, you know. Do you support federal implementation of moral direction?

I am not a Republican and I don't claim expertise on the subject. But I know enough to know that there are lots of factions. The libertarian vs. moral statist dichotomy is one of the move obvious internal conflicts. I imagine that some Republicans of libertarian bent look at it as a necessary alliance of convenience given the horror of the alternative, meaning that statist morality is less objectionable than statist economics. Some have become drunk from the Kool-Aid and/or responded to the notion that "9/11 changed everything."

An area where I do have expertise is being an outsider on this thread. It was from that angle that I responded to you.

Is Rands virtue of selfishness...compatible with a party that insist on implementing a moral direction for the people - a moral direction of course based on fundamental Christian morality.

Of course not.

If a person subscribes to Ayn's philosophies, isn't Paul the only republican candidate one could endorse?

Depends on what you mean by "endorse" and how pragmatic you are. I consider Giuliani, Thompson, and Paul to be candidates to whom I'm willing to listen. Richardson on the other side. We have a sorry lot of potential candidates. Even Paul has an apparent moral statist streak or at least tolerates that POV.
