How is the church accumulating all this property?

I don't know of a single church that uses/used contributions from its parish members to accumulate property in the parish neighborhood beyond what was obviously necessary to run the parish.

In fact, around Queens NY, many parishes are liquidating properties and merging parishes because of the changing demographics and falling need for Catholic churches and schools in NYC. The other factor is that lawyers are getting rich at the expense of the church (which is really at the expense of parishoners and others who would benefit) on all the abuse cases.
