Understanding Mpeg4/h.264, leads to understand motion Jpeg used in digital cameras that we all use?

Digital cameras use jpeg codec for picture storage. It takes the picture according to the resolution of the sensors in the camera. Then it is stored typically in four resolution from the least to the limit of the sensor built in the camera.

When these cameras take movie, it uses the least resolution then on play back machine it can restore to the maximum resolution, reversing the compression of resolution.

Mpeg4 also has four from baseline to high profile resolution. So, motion jpeg can replace Mpeg4/h.264 fairly straight forwardly. Sound can use MP3 codec.

With the current design of digital cameras, the semiconductors are not very advanced, and can use fairly small DSP processors.

Then Mpeg4 will also have the wonderful features of digital zoom, and other editing feature already developed to perfection in the digital camera technology?

Mpeg codecs were never designed to be backward compatible; none of the Mpeg1/2/3/4 can be converted efficiently digitally. They have to revert to original pictures and re-encoded to the next Mpeg standard. It is therefore more efficient to convert by optical playback and optical recording into the next Mpeg codec.
