The future is unknown and what will actually happen is subject to speculative debate. There are risks in what we decide to do no matter what.

You are mistaken. I am perfectly happy to discuss the benefits of pulling out of Iraq now. You and others have misrepresented Shep and mischaracterised my arguement. He does not discuss the benefits to the USA of leaving Iraq, while demonstrating how those benefits outweigh our commitment to remain in Iraq. He bashes Bush without substance, while doing an empty pom pom dance for the left wing.

So you insinuate that what I call facts aren't facts.

There are facts however.

It is a fact that the Al-Mahdi Army has become institutionalized under the leadership of Moktada Al-Sadr, something that wasn't taken serious by our military a few years ago but that I predicted on the foreign affairs thread, while being mocked by both right wingers and left wingers. It is supported by shadow government and is a growing force both in number and with increasing arms. Anyone can do an internet search on the prophesies around Al-Mahdi to see that this is a Shia force that could draw support from the entire Shi'ite community and is currently winning their respect. It could grow in a way that would annex even the Iranian military as an international force.

It is a fact that Al-Qaeda has not given up it's intention to create a base in Iraq.

Insurgent groups contending for power are still a threat to regional autonomy.

It is a fact that Syria, Jordan, Radical Pakistan, and radical elements in Egypt would support certain factions in Iraq.

It is a fact that the current Iraqi army Would fractionalize, splitting off to join various extremist groups without US support.

It is almost certain that the freely elected government would fail if we abandon them now.

The extremists groups have declared their intention to commit genocide onto their rivals in the midst of a region they want to control.

Extremist leaders would likely conquer various regions. The south would go to Shi'ite, the north would be split between Sunni Arab and Sunni Kurd but it wouldn't be done diplomatically it would be done in all out war. And it wouldn't end there. There would be many foriegn stake holders who've declared their intent to join the fray under such circumstances.

The extremists like Moktada Al-Sadr who would likely control the south and an Al-Qaeda Officer in the North have declared their intent to build their strength so that at some time in the future they can destroy America.

This would all amount to strategic warfare that is awful the harm done to global economic interests are also very serious.

It is a fact that if we can achieve a reasonable level of stability in Iraq, the above threats to the interests of the USA will be minimalized, at least with reference to the region of Iraq.

Those are some facts that are not in the interests of Amerca.

Now make your case for greater harm that comes to the USA by our continued support of the Iraq government.

Leaving Iraq, or at least reducing our presence and changing our role would be good when the circumstances are in America's interests. The above facts about our circumstances demonstrate why it is not good now.
