I agree being debt free is very important nowadays. I incurred debt in early 70's for properties, then worked hard to clear it. Have been debt free ever since. The following inflation made it work well. But you need very safe solid income for that. Losing part of your income with a heavy debt load means renegotiating debt if possible, otherwise forced asset sales, probably at just the worst time with many others in the same boat.
