"The short answer is Vietnam."

Vietnam left many of us with heart ache. One of the biggest problems, maybe an impossible task, was convincing those from the WWII era that Vietnam was a different case. For very good reason the proud and brave people from the WWII era were slow to adapt a different outlook. Now we have Vietnam era folk who are unable to let go of the consciousness from that era in able to see that the global society has moved on. We are involved a very very different era pal. The whole concept of nation states is disintegrating as cultures mesh and meld. That doesn't mean we are all one big happy family.

"This idea that we can prop up an Iraqi government that will survive, let alone thrive, without us could be false no matter how long we stay.

The idea that American democracy, liberties and justice could survive uncorrupted has always been tentative. Every struggle to liberate the oppressed throughout history has been risky and has always involved great sacrifice. Thank God for the noble people throughout history who've stood against brutal tyranny, always without guarantees.

"And our occupation of an Arab country hurts our friends in the region just as our troops in Saudi Arabia hurt Saudi Arabia.

So you support bigoted racism on an international level?

"American troops on Arab soil further radicalizes the region. Isn't that the opposite of our goal?"

Extremism may lie in hibernation when there is no operable venue. However, once activated toward a goal there is nothing that can stop it from growing until it accomplishes its goal or until it meets overwhelming force. The Taleban government was set up by Al-Qaeda and once that was accomplished they were prepared to move to the next level of regional domination, with the ultimate goal of global domination. Now there are copy cats in the world, some competing some collaborating. I might agree to support bringing the troops home just to wait and see what would happen, but I already know. Get out and meet some of the radicals man, I have. You have no idea what you are inviting.
