Sutro says $.54 in Q4 and Brown Bros. say $.14. Based on Sutro's claim that AMD's .25 micron K6 is only achieving 10-20% yields, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that Sutro is smoking something. Brown Bros. might be a little low, but at least they are in the ballpark. My own guess is $.20. The fact that Sutro is in outer space doesn't bode well for AMD stock as it means the street still hasn't fully discounted how bad things are at AMD.

If Sutro is right and AMD's .3 micron part is yielding 40 to 50 per wafer (out of 140 sites), then that is reasonably close to what various yield models would estimate (on the low side, but in the ballpark). The problem is that 233MHz no longer seems to yield. The claim of fewer than 70 good die per wafer in .25 micron indicates that the process isn't ready for prime time. Yields should be over 250 per wafer.

The latest Microprocessor Report says 350MHz K6 will ship in Q2 and 400MHz by the end of 1998. This is one speed grade lower than Intel's plan for P2 (according to MP). At 70 parts per wafer in .25 micron, Intel needn't worry about AMD as a threat. Maybe this will convince Intel to let up on the price decreases, but I wouldn't count on it.
