Mattel had concentrated the marketing to under 10 year old, who had no income.

The demographics in the US today, has jobs for over 14 year old and their mothers. Collectibles and larger dolls are for older girls.

Some times CEOs got one track in mind, and has to be reminded, that toys are collectibles and market is for all ages?
