When you take land, you occupy an indigenous population that's not particularly fond of said occupation. In order for a peace to be brokered a return of all or a major portion of that land is essential. That's also totally normal throughout history......

No, its common to occupy land and keep it, for centuries until the next larger army came along. The indigenous population was generally either killed or turned into slaves, or at least turned into slavelike labor on farms owned by the victors.
