When you take land, you occupy an indigenous population that's not particularly fond of said occupation. In order for a peace to be brokered a return of all or a major portion of that land is essential. That's also totally normal throughout history......

Actually not. Returns are much less common than the expulsion or assimilation of local populations.

Look at WWII: 200 miles of what used to be Germany is now in Poland, Konigsburg became Kaliningrad, the Sudetenland is now thoroughly Czech, etc etc. And Germany lost Austria and all the lands it had taken before the war. Similar results for Japan and all its territories. Nothing has been returned that I know of. Japan is still arguing over the Kuril Islands, to no effect.

Wars that aren't won, but end in stalemate can involve returns. But you started by talking about wars that were won.
