A good actor with a good scriptwriter can go far in US politics. The debates are mostly a joke - all the guy has to do is figure out which of his/her pre-rehearsed lines is least distant from the "question."

Thompson didn't have a great reputation as a senator as far as I know - the adjective I've most seen used is "lazy." (But I know nothing at all whether that description is fair or not). His key advantage right now is that he is "none of the above." All the other Republican candidates are deeply flawed in some way from the perspective of the primary electorate. McCain is clearly gone, and in someone's immortal words that aptly sum up the other two front-runners, Giuliani has been married more times than Romney has been hunting. (Thompson apparently also made hay while he was in DC, but he wasn't married at the time and so will likely get a free pass on this. What the voters will think of his trophyesque wife I'm not at all sure.)

Bottom line I really wouldn't underestimate Thompson here. If he can avoid self-destructing on the campaign trail and can buckle down and learn his lines well he's going to be a force to be reckoned with.
