We had the same problem many a summer with the old heat pump. Now we use 2 window air conditioners - one on each floor - and it cools our whole home for 1/3 the cost. We decided on the air conditioners for a total of $300 when we got an estimate of $6,000 to replace the heat pump.

This is the second year we have used them and it is working just fine.... temp outside was over 90 today and our home was 70.

We use a combo of electric heaters (6 for $90) and fireplace (with Heatalator) in winter time - again, at less cost to run than the old heat pump.

One of the reasons we can do this is that we have 3 rooms we do not need to heat/cool and of course the basement doesn't need it either. And an electric blanket works well at night in the winter.
