I agree wrt to a party. There are of course individuals. But yes, my point and your point is essentially the same here. A Pal Ghandi would have solved the thing long ago, but partly because this would have forced modified Israeli behavior.

There are few moderate individuals, and when you find them, you notice that they all have some special protection, like Sari Nussiebeh, who comes from an elite Jerusalem family and is famous in the West. Common men don't dare to express moderate views because the accusation of collaberation is fatal. And it goes without saying that what moderates there are have no political backing; that belongs to the men with the guns.

If you read Arab papers, you notice the pattern even with op-ed writers who far from the conflict, yet don't dare to openly express moderate views. If they want to, there is an exercise where they spend the first 2/3 of the column dutifully bashing Israel to prove that they are 'on-side', then sidle up to their real idea in the last 1/3, usually by asking obliquely if Arab policies have really been such a good idea for the Arabs.

There is something about Arab culture that does not permit self-criticism. It makes news when someone dares.
