I've usually bought new when I had to (2 cars rear-ended and totalled), due to the depreciation issue. I had a VW Jetta for 11 years, 1985-1996, that was cheap to run and repair. At 11 it needed too much repair, plus no AC and I had a newborn. We bought a new 1996 Volvo wagon that we loved, and when it was rear-ended we bought a used 1998 Volvo wagon that turned out to be a piece of junk. Quality seems to be all over the map. Now we have a 2002 Honda Odyssey we bought used on Ebay that we like very much.
