I think that is a better term for writers like Alexandre Dumas. The closest thing today would be "Docudrama" writers, but there is a subtle difference. Unlike docudramas that target a wide audience, the works of writers like Dumas addressed the upper classes of the society. Those gentlemen were already well familiar with the official history. The trick was then to rewrite an intriguing account of events in such a way that while the major verifiable events would match the official history, underneath an alternative course of events was presented. I suppose today we'd call such people "conspiracy theorists."
