There had to be some rumors getting out. Hard to know for sure. After a time then they all must have known and Jews tried to hide. The population must have had a silent consent or they would have risen up and stopped it. But also there was probably a certain amount of doubt about what was really happening overall. The full horror wasn't known until the liberation. The camp guards said they were just following orders. Right. They deserved to be hung.
