But that is not a realistic way of life for most people.

That illustrates how we are talking about two different things. I am talking about poverty in terms of survival. You are talking about poverty in terms of a realistic way of life.

The threshold in question is important because it's where we determine appropriate redistribution of income to lie. And redistribution of income is important because it impacts incentive and growth and because it tends to create a mindset for many about rights as citizens. The right to the necessities for survival and to a realistic way of life are quite different, as is clear from your perception vs. mine.

How we treat all those things between the survival line and your realistic-way-of-life-line, such as movies and schmoozing and kids and a New York address, matters. If you treat them as necessities, you get one kind of society. If you treat them as character and wealth building opportunities for individuals, you get another.

I've been poor and I've been comfortable. The way you get from A to B, for the most part, is either by effectively claiming it as a right to be supported by others or by building it yourself. Very different paradigms.
