Chile copper giant Codelco near deal with striking subcontractors

platts.com;

Santiago, Chile (Platts)--19Jul2007

Chile's state copper company Codelco said Thursday that it expected to
reach a deal with the leaders of a 25-day-old strike by employees of
subcontractor firms providing services to the mining company's mines and
smelters.
Following a meeting in Santiago, Chile, VP for shared services Daniel
Barria said that he expected the two sides to reach a deal July 20.
The two sides were meeting for the first time since the weekend after the
protesters agreed to call off a blockade of Codelco's Salvador division which
has halted all production at the 70,000 mt/year mine and smelter complex.
Barria's optimism was shared by Cristian Cuevas, president of the union
which has led the nationwide protests.
"There is greater willingness to resolve the conflict and we think that
tomorrow we will come together to finalize a major deal for the workers," the
official said.
But he said that the issues of wages and a bonus to reflect Codelco's
recent large profits had yet to be resolved, "but I believe we are in the home
straight."
The protesters have demanded that Codelco pay them a bonus worth Chilean
Peso 2.4 million ($5,000) each, something the state mining company has said
is impossible given that the workers are not direct employees.
Codelco produces around 1.8 million mt/year of copper.
