if u look from when East India Company arrived in India, and when the British Empire left India, you are likely to find a timeframe of aprox 300-400 years.

re taxes - every country (apart from the GCC countries) collects it - its the reason why there is a popular saying "taxes and death are the only certainties in life".

A couple of days ago - there was an interesting article on the Times of India website - an interview with Lord Mounbatten's daughter - remember he was the last viceroy of India - it made comments to the effect that Mountbatten was opposed to partition, but had no choice because Jinnah insisted on it. Historical records also show that Gandhi was opposed to partition.
