Perhaps you know the answer to this. My car has a graphic display of current MPG. It dances around all over the place. Even allowing that the display might not be precisely real time, it often doesn't seem to correlate with my expectations given what's going on. Sometimes I can clearly see the MPG dropping, for example, when going up a hill. Other times it's counter-intuitive. Do you know how accurate those devices are?

P.S. I have had two cars that specifically cautioned me against using higher octane than specified, a Nissan 300XZ and my current Honda Accord. The car in between, an Acura RL, required premium gas so using higher test gas wasn't an issue. FWIW.
