My car has a graphic display of current MPG... Do you know how accurate those devices are?

Real time displays will dance around and are just approximations. The cumulative displays, at least on the cars I drive, tend to be fairly accurate. I have a friend whose display is quite a bit off, so one size doesn't seem to fit all.

If you're curious, taking odometer readings with several tank fills and doing the MPG math and then cross checking the results with your cars cumulative display (reset it each time you fill) will tell you how accurate it actually is..

Edit: Using a higher octane gas than recommended will do no harm. It's just a waste of money..
