LB is going to ban me for continuing this OT discussion, but here goes.. :-)

Techron is a patented detergent additive developed by Chevron. When they merged with Texaco, it was added to Texaco's gas as well. It's available in concentrated bottle form in auto parts stores and many gas stations. Several mechanics I know, whose knowledge is greater than mine and who take engines apart all the time, swear by the stuff.

Shell has their own proprietary additive, which gives them top tier qualification, and I imagine the other top tier producers..

I don't think that Top Tier is just a marketing ploy. The auto companies don't want to deal with fuel system and emission problems (and subsequent damage to their reputation) that can be caused by use of low standard fuel..
