Why do you have to be so defensive about any criticism of British Raj? The British were savvy administrators. But that does not mean that they had they had the interest of their subjects at heart. When the going got difficult they cut and ran away form their responsibilities. 4 million dead in famine, half a million in partition. These are not trivial numbers.

Whatever you may say about the indian democracy, it has allowed voice to sections of society that did not have much say for hundreds of years.
