You've seen at least some of the art the Catholic Church possesses. It goes well beyond mere decoration. And it isn't just the Catholic Church, but they are the largest. There is a reason why the Calvinists, despite be dour and not a lot of fun, made so many inroads. It wasn't required, they just had the power and the money.
