Some nice comments in here from a surpise recruit...
DB Eddie Whitley Commits to VT by Will Stewart, TechSideline.com
The Hokies got a big verbal commitment today when Eddie Whitley, the #11-ranked prospect in the state of North Carolina per Rivals.com, chose the Hokies on ESPNU.
Whitley, a 6-1, 175-pound defensive back prospect out of Butler High School in Matthews, NC, chose the Hokies over the home state NC State Wolfpack. Whitley had been thought to be NC State-bound, so his commitment to Virginia Tech was a surprise and represented a big late comeback by the Hokies.
Whitley liked both programs, but in the end, it was the people on the Virginia Tech campus that made him choose the Hokies. Whitley visited Virginia Tech last Thursday, then decided for Tech over the weekend.
On his Thursday visit, he spent time on the main campus, instead of just at the football facilities, and that's what sealed the deal.
"I really did favor NC State," Whitley said. "I came back from a visit there, and I really liked it a lot. But I had never gotten to tour the Virginia Tech campus. The last time I visited Tech was for football camp, and I just toured the football facilities. I didn't go on campus and talk to people. When I finally did that, I really saw a difference between Virginia Tech and N.C. State, in how genuine the people are."
Whitley is the Hokies' 14th verbal commitment for the 2008 recruiting class, and he represents an important out of state commitment, one the Hokies thought they wouldn't get until very recently. |
