The sad part of set-top box with Mpeg4/h.264 decoders is that encoders are not standard. Then the most important fact is that Mpeg1/2/3/4 are not backward compatible in codecs. You have to convert by reverting to video picture, then encode again. This puts resolution and number of color in the first priority in software solution. But the mismatch of either resolution or number of colors create rejection by customers of the set-top box as equipment failure.

So, for many years, set-top box manufacturers sell the equipment but 100% got returned. There is no Mpeg4/h.264 set-top box business anywhere. Set-top boxes(DirecTV, cable triple play) sold are Mpeg2 and/or Mpeg1 codecs only.

A few companies struggling with major technical problems are CCUR, WGNR and EAGB. Until they sell products compatible with Mpeg1/2, the future is more rejections by customers. These companies have to do soul searching to get the products technically perfect to be in the video business.

If they insist on Mpeg4/h.264 only approach. then they have to build optical converters to playback Mpeg1/2 pictures(on LCD screen) and encode with Mpeg4/h.264 cameras from Japan. Camera microphones directly coupled to computer stereo earphones like acoustic couplers. Mpeg2 Dolby can not convert to Mpeg4 Mp3 audio codecs electronically.

ARRS has broadband set-top box of cable modem to computers, it can do any Mpeg1/2/3/4, so they have good business prospect. And they have to study media available over the years. some day use optical conversion to own Mpeg4/h.264 coded media library, with video editing to enhance new media creation.
