Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan in 1942 at age 24. He was a "kleagle" or recruiter and was "exalted cyclops" in his local chapter.

In 1946, after already entering politics, he wrote this to the KKK's Imperial Wizard: "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia."

In 1947 at the age of 28, he opposed the military's proposed integration. He wrote a letter to segregationist senator Theodore Bilbo (D, Miss.), saying he would "never submit to fight beneath the banner [the American flag] with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

With his fellow Democrats, Byrd helped to filibuster the 1964 Civil Rights Act for 83 days. In 1967, Byrd worked with fellow southern Democrats to oppose Thurgood Marshall's nomination to the Supreme Court. He's the only Senator to have voted against both black nominees to the high court.

In March of 2001, at age 83, Robert Byrd said, “There are white n*ggers. I´ve seen a lot of white n*ggers in my time.”

It's a scandal or should be that a major party has this man as Senate Majority Leader.
