FWIW, a fellow on Motley Fool's message board offers explanation of Q3's downfall:

It was great to read a rather thoughtful review of AMD and its product - the K6. I too am a strong supporter and shareholder of AMD and believe that AMD has a very bright future.

Only have a few thoughts to add:

1) I am given to understand that the production problems came as a result of satisfying IBM's chip production yield concerns and therefore winning the world's second largest computer maker. To explain, in the not too distant past IBM showed interest in the K6 for their product lines. They wanted the 233 K6. They required volume production to satisfy their demand. AMD was just ramping production of the 233K6 and I am given to understand they were not yet producing at a rate to meet IBM's requirements. AMD ha
d a choice to make: speed up the ramp or tell IBM to come back in 2 or 3 months. They made the right decision - they fast forwarded the production ramp and won the IBM contract. The down fall comes with the fact that when you try to do a NEW, COMPLEX task and an ACCELERATED rate you blow your learning curve and make more mistakes than normal. Production yields fall. I am lead to believe that this is the story of AMD's third quarter.

2) Because AMD sped up the ramp, they are now ahead of schedule with the move to 233 K6 production. They are also farther advanced than originally planned on the move to .25 micron production. As of 3 weeks ago, I was told AMD was producing about 150,000 good K6 chips per week. All positive for the 4th quarter.

3) Has anybody heard of the 'K6 Plus'? I have heard that AMD has reworked many aspects of the K6 (chipsets, cache, etc.). These changes are apparently going to be announced at Micro Processor Forum the week of Oct. 11, 1997.

4) Last, I hear that the 300 Mhz K6 has such a low power draw that it will be introduced in laptops. This should provide some very positive news!!

While I may be off base on some of this information, I offer it to all Fools with respect and care.

Regards,

MrMac
