Intel has new chip aimed at network servers
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 6 (Reuter) - Intel Corp. on Tuesday will introduce a new processor designed specifically for networked servers, as part of its increasing focus on that sector of the computer market.
On Tuesday, at the Networld/Interop trade show in Atlanta, Intel is scheduled to introduce the I/O (input/output) processor. At the same time, a big group of system partners are due to announce they will include the chip in new servers, for shipment during the next three months.
Intel said computer makers such as Acer America Corp. AST Computer, Compaq Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Gateway 2000 Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., International Business Machines Corp., Micron Electronics Inc. and NEC Computer Systems division and others, will support the chip.
The new I/O processor will be used in addition to Intel's Pentium and Pentium II processors, which are the brain chips of the PC.
Intel said that the new chip will make it easier to connect disparate devices, such as routers, to the servers which run corporate networks. It will also move some of the processing power to the I/O processor, making systems faster. |
