Iraq is VERY like Vietnam. We built "permanent" bases there as well, Cam Ranh Bay comes to mind:

After we bugged out, the Soviets put it to use, and the Vietnamese use it to this day. I'm sure someone, perhaps Iran, will use the facilities we leave in Iraq.

Both wars were mistaken elective wars of choice. Both wars featured corrupt, incompetent local governments that weren't accepted by the people. Both featured insurgencies sheltered by the population. Both were pointless quagmires fought for lies and the egos of leaders who couldn't admit they were WRONG. Both lost the support of the American people.
