I never get lost, and I always come out of the woods in sight of my pickup. However, I spent my first ever unplanned night in the woods.

I slept right on the site where five men were murdered in 1863. I was too beat to go on, so I walked down to the Selway River after sleeping all night next to a rock. I didn't see any ghosts. I don't think it is the actual site, but there is a sign there telling some of the story, and it's in the hardest place to get to I've ever been. Here's an old rendition of the story from Vigilante Days and Ways, written by N.P. Langford, the first director of Yellowstone National Park (and a Vigilante): umwestern.edu

Of course, my pickup was right where I came out of the woods. I'll post some pictures later.
