Isn't that what the German (oe Saxony) government tried in the past few years. To finance AMD and give then subsidies to help them in the fight against Intel ? How much did they burn so far ? a $billion ? maybe more ?

Didn't Morgan Stanley just blow $4.2B of customers' money on the same precept ?

It looks to me the German fabs are completely obsolete now, and they did not earn the money to replace their old equipment. I can understand how a government will try again (another subsidy for $360m a week ago). What (aside from a desire to subsidize employment) will motivate a private company to do that ?
