The chairman of DELL COMPUTER CORP said he would shut APPLE
COMPUTER INC down if he were put in charge of it. Dell chairman
Michael Dell was appearing earlier as a keynote panelist at an
information technology symposium hosted by Gartner Group Inc.
Responding to a hypothetical question about what he would do in
Steve Jobs' position to try to solve the problems at Apple, Dell
at first appeared reluctant to answer the question. Asked the
question a second time, Dell responded "what would I do? I'd shut
it down and give the money back to the shareholders." "We don't
really have anything to say," said an Apple spokeswoman, when told
about Dell's comment. (Reuters 03:17 PM ET 10/06/97)
