"we can't have the Saudis undermining our efforts." Thus far though, we have actually done little-to-nothing to stop that. In fact, possibly the best thing we could do would be to simply get out of Iraq... and sit back and watch while the Saudis finance and support the Sunni insurgents against the Iranian-backed Shiite government in the coming civil war. BOTH sets of extremists (Sunni and Shia) would be bogged down in an unwinable civil and religious war... forced to pump their oil full-out to pay for their war efforts. Ultimately, it is most likely that both the corrupt Saudi Monarchy, and the Iranian Theocracy would fall... giving Democracy probably the best chance in the region that it is ever likely to get. (Certainly if we continue to support the Saudi Monarch Democracy is unlikely to happen within our lifetimes....)
