emphatic no.

IH or no flush is different from slow release niacin and OK as far as anyone knows.

PS and on another topic, it has been revealed that statin niacin combinations were effective in reducing cholesterol plaque on arteries, but specific anti-oxidants were not that effective in combination with niacin-statin and not that effective as supplements by themselves. These supplements were a combo of vitamin E, Selenium and Vitamin C.

The reasons are these:

1. Vitamin e in the alpha-tocopherol form should not be taken. Nor especially should dl-tocopheral or synthetic E. They are toxins that depletes the anti-oxidant action of gamma tocopherol that is most plentiful in natural E. An E that is balanced with the greatest component being gamma tocopherol amd related tocotrienols should be ingested and in combination with A, D and E. The A that should be taken is not vitamine A but retinol, the precursor to A. These vitamins should be taken with fish or olive oil, or some other fat and also with some vegetable/juice combo such as that contains D, A and calcium to assist absorption. Without D being taken, calcium will be in excess in the blood. With any doubt take wheat germ oil that is organic, and drink orange juice and organic skim milk.

2. Vitamin C is practically useless as an anti-oxidant without a score of bioflavonoids in concert like pro-anthocyandin, quercetin, etc.. so the vegetables sans insecticides and perhaps some vitamin P supplements need be taken. More than 250 mgs C at a time is useless. It should also be taken at mostly at night.

3. Selenium in bioavailable forms is high in people with low stroke and HD rates. It needs magnesium to be effective in serum in reducing HD. However to be beneficial to the circulatory system one could use accompanying magnesium. I don't think selenium by itself is the smoking gun, but rather the lack of other things.

A holistic multi causational disease of the greater system, like heart disease will probably resist simplistic "take these three things and continue to sin everywhere else" solutions. All we know about selenium is that is is very high in people that suffer from very low arterial plaque and very low stroke rates. You can get selenium from certain grains and from fish. Canadians have the highest selenium of any major nation, and also the lowest stroke rate of major nations. They get it from their hard wheat on the prairies. Cretans, Okinawans, and Greenland Eskimos get sky high selenium from eating fish, squid or sea mammals. You need synergy of things to make it work obviously. Perhaps either GLA, or CLA, or Omega 3 is needed coupled with other minerals and gamma tocopherol AND the absence of lindane allowing a high inositol reading to make it work!!! You can't waterski in a desert.

All the above vitamins need minerals in excess if they are used in therapuetic levels. The reason the vitamins are better absorbed in foods, is that they are in bioavailable forms that are slow released in the intestine and are accompanied by beneficial fiber that slows down fat absorption by promoting intestinal movement.

If anti-oxidants do not get replenished by other anti-oxidants they become toxic. Excess vitamins at therapuetic levels require balanced amounts of ALL vitamins, and also minerals to be effective. Mindell's class book on vitaminology outlines the need to take vitamins in groups and also not to take excess of a few vitamins that may cause a perceived deficiency of other groups. Vitamins are complex. It's either go big and universal and imbibe with appropriate substances and good groups or go home. And multis are a no no for the most part. Their manufacture is bad. They contain toxins and analogs that make it worse than taking no vitamins at all. There are exceptions such as CNC and AOR.

So what do you do? Bit the bullet and take them all. Individually. Or eat organic and eat only substances that emphasize vitamin therapy and avoid ALL vitamin killers. that means eschew or do not chew any food that contains an unnatural toxin.
