a major is a poor predictor of lifetime income.

there must be some statistics to support or denie that statement.

certainly a graduate engineer, accountant, computer science jumps out into the world with better financial offers than liberal arts programs. certainly they change positions several times. If an engineering degree brings a person to head a corporation or computer sciences or accounting does that mean they changed careers and the their major had nothing to do with income? Hardly, it was the major that was the factor and base to spring to their ability to change positions vs a liberal arts program without any base in those majors.

I remember back in the 60's a professor came up to me and said you are only here to get your degree and earn a larger income! i told him of course. why to do you think i go nights three or four times a week? It is a must do! vs would like to do! in order to advance in the business world. If i had my choice i would have only gotten a certificate in accounting that covered all required major accounting courses but that would not have qualified me for advancement because the corp.... required a degree... so you painfully go through a few more years of taking liberal arts courses to graduate with a full degree.

where are these professors heads? Kids went to college to get away from home, have a blast, and take some gut courses and then graduate with a degree and find out no demand for their degrees and go to work in retail stores etc with a degree , well rounded in global warming etc but of no use to earn an income. those who took on engineering, computer sciences etc.. worked hard through school for the most part, got the grades and terrific job offers.

certainly , some went for the educational experiences , however i believe those kids came from family backgrounds where earning the next buck to put food on the table was not a high priority. Perhaps the family income was already set for junior when he came out of college. he would join the family business. the family had sufficient funds to establish a trust for him. or his parents were flower children and could care less about future income. I expect the students who majored in teaching were from parents who influenced them or mentors during their life time in primary school. again their major was a predictor of income. They had the foundation to advance in the academic world
