INNOVACOM INTRODUCES VERSATILE, POWERFUL NEW VIDEO SERVER AT INTEROP; FIRST TO USE GIGABIT ETHERNET FOR DIGITAL BROADCAST
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. Oct. 7, 1997 (OTC/BB: MPEG) designerand marketer of MPEG-2 video compression products, is introducing a new video server utilizing InnovaCom MPEG-2 technology. The first server to use Gigabit Ethernet technology for digital video broadcast, the new TeraStream system is capable of receiving and storing MPEG-2 multiplexed audio and video up to 15 Mbps and optionally distributing via DVB satellite uplinks. The TeraStream will be shown at the Networld+Interop Forum in Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 8-10, 1997. Nominally configured at 69 Gigabytes, it will store up to 20 hours of digitally-encoded broadcast programming at eight Mbps. It provides broadcast interface utilizing Internet control. Industry research organization, In-Stat, projects in excess of $1.2 billion in revenues from sales of Gigabit Ethernet products by the year 2001. Mark C. Koz, InnovaCom chairman and president, said: "The Gigabit Ethernet backbone is the new standard for networking communications and its use with our new server places InnovaCom on the leading edge of video and audio networking technology. The server combines advanced MPEG-2 video with an unusually high storage capacity that can support up to 1 terabyte, making it the most flexible server system available today for storage, retrieval, archiving and distribution. With the addition of a DVD RAM Juke Box, the storage capacity becomes virtually unlimited." Mr. Koz said the Gigbit Ethernet backbone will be used by InnovaCom at the Interop Network Operation Center to distribute video streams to a number of companies that include Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, Digital Equipment, and Compaq Computer. It will use the Extreme Networks Local Area Network switch. Demonstrations of streams from the server, as well as InnovaCom's other MPEG-2 compression products, will be shown at the Network Applications Technology Showcase at Interop. Networld+Interop, now in its eleventh year is a SOFTBANK forum and attracts over 50,000 network and internet professionals from around the world. The TeraStream server receives, stores and distributes MPEG-2 video and audio data to and from multiple clients, combining compressed video, networking, and high storage capacity in a single package. It is designed for use in DVB (digital video broadcast), satellite and terrestrial broadcast applications, and is completely controllable through the Internet. It is compatible with all DVB broadcast network interfaces. The server will support multiple decode clients as well as encode clients with an aggregate bit rate of up to 600 Mbps. It is capable of transmitting a DVB stream to a satellite with an aggregate bit rate of up to 200 Mbps. It supports remote content requests for DVB distribution via Internet connections. TeraStream supports the Internet Explorer 4.0 with web video serving capability, which will permit a user to call for any variety of additional video feeds at the completion of a satellite feed. The server also supports independent standard video database applications including Oracle's Video Server, Microsoft's NetShow Professional and InfoValue's Quick Video Server and will support Video on Demand standards in the future. It supports Internet standards including multicasting, RTP and RSVP. TeraStream will be available for delivery in December, 1997. Program content for the MPEG-2 Gigabit Ethernet video streams at Interop is furnished through the Sierra Vista Entertainment Division of InnovaCom. During the past year InnovaCom has completed marketing agreements with or designed MPEG-2 product configurations for several companies . They are: -Sun Microsystems--Design of an MPEG-2 encoding board for its UltraSPARC workstation. -ESS Technology--Joint development of MPEG-2 encoders for DVD authoring systems and set top boxes.
-Digital Equipment Corporation--Cross licensing agreement to develop and share program interfaces for MPEG-2 encoding on Windows and Windows NT. -Mitsubishi--Joint development of a DVD-R recording system. -Litton's Fibercom Division--Integration of InnovaCom's DV 2100 MPEG-2 board in its CAMVision-2 network video delivery system. Separately, InnovaCom said that it was currently undergoing an independent audit for its year ended Dec. 31, 1996 in preparation for a filing of a registration statement under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 on SEC Form 10 as soon as possible after the completion of the audit. Thereafter, as soon as reasonably practical, InnovaCom intends to file its final application with the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD) to list its common stock on the NASDAQ Stock Market. Currently, InnovaCom's shares are traded on the NASD OTC Electronic Bulletin Board.
