The case for optimism: When I was a kid some people were actually building bomb shelters in their back yards to "protect" themselves from global thermonuclear war. No matter what anyone may claim to the contrary, I'd say we've made some significant progress from those days. (And it's taken a fair amount of the power cosmic to make it so. But more good news is that there's more where that came from...) As for the lyrics, a philosophical commentary on how conscious or unconscious fear of death can dominate a person's life. This is, of course, unnecessary. Another case for optimism: RMTR was up on a horrible day. Rainbows everywhere for those who choose to see them... And live free or die hard. Yes, there I go again...
