Thompson is being very smart, IMO...He is staying out of the race as long as he can, so will be a "fresh fact". He also is talking to everyone possible to garner support and knowledge of those who have already "been there, done that." In addition, he is gathering free PR, thus saving money, and at the same time, perhaps getting some financial commitments organized.
