Unfortunately "winning" depends on the Iraqis shaping up, and that just isn't going to happen. We can surge all we want, but with the Iraqis failing to step up to the plate- either politically or in terms of infrastructure (like a police force and military force that can really take control)- we really can't "win". Lucky Iran.

It's not about liberals (and now some conservatives), who want to cut our losses, it's about the fact that the losses are there to cut because the Iraqis are not now, and never were, adequate partners in this. The invasion was done at the behest of no authentic resistance group in Iraq proper, and the ex patriots that championed it have frequently turned out to be charlatans and criminals. While the Iraqis initially (and perhaps even now) were pleased to be rid of Saddam, they seem incapable of actually putting together any system of government that will work without the US propping it up (and even then the system only works marginally- and fewer services seem to be available than when Saddam was in power- and this after several years of US occupation.) The loss of intellectual capital in Iraq in terms of the fleeing educated classes is now beyond the point of remediation. On that basis alone I think it's just a matter of time until everyone realizes this just isn't going to work- and there really is no one to blame but 1. the morons who thought taking out Saddam was a good idea and 2. the Iraqis who didn't realize that once the US morons screwed them, it was in their interest to try to ameliorate the effects of the screwing.

While some whine about the failure of spine in the US to support the war endlessly, the real problem is a failure of Iraqi spine (following, of course, the breathtakingly stupid actions of the US)- not that we can really criticize them that much for failing to embrace an "opportunity" that was foisted upon them.
