I agree they aren't trying hard enough. They could, even with lead-acid batteries, make a plug-in car that would handle all around-town needs on electric and have a very small gasoline or diesel engine for cross country trips and still be affordable.

The government could make it happen by eliminating all regulations and taxes on such electric vehicles to kick start the process - like they did with the internet..

It's not rocket science, people have been building electric vehicles since the 1840's. I'll be if you searched "Popular Mechanics" you'd find fifty articles about guys who built their own electric car over the years.
