What they need to do is what they have been doing with locomotives for decades. Take advantage of the fact that an IC engine is most efficient when running at a constant speed under a constant load. So couple it to a generator, buffer it with a battery and run the wheels off of electricity.

In other words, what GM is planning to do with the Volt. Mechanically, it is much simpler than the Prius, so should be cheaper. Using regenerative braking, it would be more efficient and should be cheaper overall. Wouldn't need a huge battery, 10 or so miles should be more than enough on battery alone. Which eliminates the battery technology problem.
