Compromise is almost synonymous with making a pact with the devil to many Arabs. It’s a stereo type but the attitude is very common. There is an ancient pre-Islam story that describes Arab character as one in which being wrong is never an option.

I read somewhere but have not confirmed that there is no direct translation of our word "compromise" in Arabic. They have to coin a new compound word by saying "half-way solution" instead. The Arabs traditionally solve conflict by mediation by a third party of higher status than the two who have the conflict. That way someone can be ruled against and submit without too much loss of face. Face to face compromise is impossible because of the dangerous loss of face it would create. Loss of face is weakness. Weakness invites attack.
