Motorola sees modem unit review in Q4

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Oct 7 (Reuter) - Motorola Information Systems
Group said Tuesday it expects to complete a review of of options
for its low-end modem business during the 1997 fourth quarter.

Motorola Information Systems Group, a unit of Motorola Inc, has
said it is exploring possible sale of the business in an effort
to refocus its resources on more strategic technologies and other
products.

The company said it hired Goldman, Sachs to assist for the review.

The Huntsville facility produces and markets consumer product
lines which include SURFR modems used in homes and businesses for
Internet access and telecommuting.

The modem business is dominated by 3Com Corp's (COMS) U.S.
Robotics unit,
and Lucent Technologies Inc (LU). Modems
contribute only a small portion to Motorola's $28 billion in
annual revenue.

Guess ROK no longer a factor. <g>
