The problem is that volatility levels are still low. So you see whereas in the old days VIX at 25 would cause a 15% decline, today it means 1/2 that. And a 40 Vix would be bought outright and probably only mean a 10% or so decline in the markets.

The market has to absorb higher levels of volatility before you get the massive nominal swings that we identify with the late 90's (the good 'ol days!). It's a gradual process. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel as a bull, but it's more an '08 thing, not this year.
